About.

VAHCDO plays an important role in the formulation of housing and redevelopment policy in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Such policy influence results from the strength and support of our member agencies and the effective leadership of Board of Directors. VAHCDO representatives interact regularly with the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA), Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (VDHCD), Virginia Housing Study Commission, and the Virginia Office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). VAHCDO has also joined with the Virginia Housing Coalition (VHC) in addressing policy issues of mutual concern such as the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program.

Since 1941,

the Virginia Association of Housing and Community Development Officials (VAHCDO) has assisted Virginia's redevelopment and housing authorities and local government housing and community development departments in promoting affordable housing opportunities and vibrant communities. VAHCDO is organized as a non-profit organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code with a mission designed to support its members' efforts to improve the health and living standards of Virginia's citizens, encourage community development, eliminate substandard and inadequate housing, eradicate slums, blighted or deteriorating areas, and promote other such actions to help achieve the goal of providing a decent home and suitable living environment for Virginia's families.

Our organization is engaged in

four primary activities to accomplish its mission:
  1. Fostering an environment which promotes communication and networking among entities engaged in the housing and community development industry;
  2. Facilitating member training;
  3. Participating in the formulation of state housing and community development policy; and
  4. Providing scholarship opportunities to foster the higher education aspirations of students residing in public and Section 8 assisted housing.

Please allow me to extend a sincere welcome to you from the Virginia Association of Housing and Community Development Officials (VAHCDO).

As the President of VAHCDO, I am fortunate to serve with the nonprofits, associations, businesses  and redevelopment and housing authorities who create affordable housing opportunities for families throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Together, we are a part of the always growing and evolving  housing community in Virginia which provides 314,000 jobs paying more than $14 billion in annual wages, salaries and benefits.

Since, 1971, VAHCDO has sought to offer programs and activities that match the varied interests and needs of our members.  We also strive to advocate for our industry and provide training for the current and future needs of housing professionals.  And just in case we missed something, we maintain an open ear to receive your comments, questions and suggestions for how we can better serve.

With all that is going on at VAHCDO – annual conference, scholarships, targeted trainings, advocacy seminars – we want to request that you get involved in any of the events that occur throughout the year.  And, if you are already involved, we hope you will encourage your associates and staff to take an active interest in the Virginia Association of Housing and Community Development Officials.

For more information, please check out our most recent Annual Report. And take a minute to send us your email address so that we can send you timely information.  In the meantime, thanks for your efforts and all that you do in support of the low to moderate income families for which affordable housing is the first need.

Sincerely,

Philip Page, Jr.
President, VAHCDO
